Hillfort

Birutė Hill

A sacred hillfort in Palanga Botanical Park, associated with Duchess Birutė – one of Lithuania's most romantic places.

Birutė Hill is a 21-meter hillfort in Palanga Botanical Park, right by the Baltic Sea. According to legend, the vestal virgin Birutė lived here, tending the sacred fire. Duke Kęstutis saw her, fell in love, and married her – thus Birutė became the mother of Vytautas the Great. A chapel built in 1869 stands on top of the hill. It is one of Palanga's most popular attractions – from the summit you can see the sea and the panorama of the botanical park. The hill is surrounded by ancient oaks.
