Defensive Hillfort

Punia Hillfort

One of the tallest and most impressive Lithuanian hillforts on the Nemunas River, known as Margis Hill.

Punia Hillfort is one of the largest and best-preserved Lithuanian hillforts, rising 40 meters above the Nemunas River. The hillfort is associated with the legendary duke Margis, who defended the castle against the Teutonic Order in the 13th century. According to legend, seeing that the defenders would lose, Margis set the castle ablaze and perished in the flames. The summit offers breathtaking views of the Nemunas bends. It is one of the "Millennium Hillforts" selected in 2018 for Lithuania's centennial of statehood.
