Defensive Hillfort

Veliuona Hillfort

Also called Gediminas Hill – one of the most important defensive hillforts along the Nemunas, associated with Grand Duke Gediminas.

Veliuona Hillfort, also known as Gediminas Hill, stands on steep slopes above the Nemunas River. According to legend, Grand Duke Gediminas defended the castle here against the Teutonic Order and was killed in 1341. The hillfort was one of the most important elements of Lithuania's defensive system along the Nemunas. In the 14th century, it was repeatedly attacked and destroyed by the Teutonic Order. The summit offers excellent views of the Nemunas valley. Nearby are Veliuona's church and old cemetery.
