Ninth Fort Museum

A former Kaunas Fortress fort that became a memorial site for World War II victims. Over 50,000 people, mostly of Jewish origin, were murdered here.

The Ninth Fort is a former Kaunas Fortress defensive structure built in the late 19th – early 20th century. During World War II, the Nazis turned it into a site of mass extermination – over 50,000 people were murdered here, mostly Jews from Kaunas and other European countries. The museum exhibition tells the story of the Kaunas Fortress history, the Holocaust tragedy, and Soviet-era repressions. Visitors can see authentic fort rooms, prison cells, and the memorial complex with monumental sculpture. It is one of the most important Holocaust remembrance sites in Lithuania and Europe. The museum is part of UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme.
