The Kaunas City Museum operates in the Kaunas Old Town and presents the city's history from ancient times to the present. The exhibitions cover the history of Kaunas Castle, medieval trade routes, the interwar period when Kaunas served as the temporary Lithuanian capital, and modern city life. The museum preserves rich archaeological collections, photographic archives, and historical relics. Special attention is given to the 1919–1940 Kaunas modernist architecture, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023. The museum organizes city history tours and educational events. It is an excellent place to begin exploring Kaunas.
