Rambynas Regional Park
The park protects the mythological Rambynas hill – one of the most sacred pagan sites in Lithuania. A traditional celebration takes place here every Midsummer.
Rambynas Regional Park, established in 1992, protects Rambynas hill and the Nemunas bank near the Lithuania-Russia border (Kaliningrad region). Rambynas is one of the most sacred ancient Lithuanian sites, where according to legend a pagan sanctuary with an eternal fire once stood. Every year on Midsummer (June 23), a traditional bonfire celebration takes place here, attracting thousands of people. The hill offers views of the Nemunas and the Kaliningrad region. Unfortunately, the hill is gradually eroding. The park also contains the Bitėnai cemetery, where Martynas Jankus, patriarch of Lithuania Minor, is buried.
