The park encompasses two large lakes – Metelis and Dusia, which are important bird breeding sites. One of the best birdwatching locations in Lithuania.
Metelis Regional Park, established in 1992, encompasses two large lakes in southern Lithuania – Metelis and Dusia. Both lakes are among the largest in Lithuania and are important bird breeding and stopover sites. Visitors can observe swans, cranes, great bitterns, and many other bird species. Lake Metelis is one of the cleanest lakes in Lithuania. The surroundings feature Meteliai village with an old church and ethnographic homesteads. The park borders Poland and is near the Suwałki region – forming a transboundary nature protection zone.
