Trakai Historical National Park

The only historical national park in Lithuania, famous for Trakai Island Castle – the only island castle in Eastern Europe. Home to the unique Karaim community.

Trakai Historical National Park is the only historical national park in Lithuania, established in 1991. The park's symbol is Trakai Island Castle, built in the 14th–15th centuries on an island in Lake Galvė, the only island castle in Eastern Europe. Since the 14th century, Trakai has been home to the Karaim – a Turkic people brought from Crimea by Vytautas the Great. Their culture, language, and traditional dishes (kibinai pastries) are a unique Lithuanian heritage. The park territory contains 32 lakes, including Galvė, Totoriškiai, and Bernardinai lakes.
