Regional Park
Varniai Regional Park
The park protects the surroundings of the former Samogitian diocese center – Varniai. Famous for Lūkstas lake and Bilioniai hillfort – the presumed Samogitian capital.
Varniai Regional Park, established in 1992, encompasses the town of Varniai and surrounding territory in western Lithuania. Varniai was the center of the Samogitian diocese from the 15th to 19th centuries – one of the most important religious and cultural centers in Samogitia. The park features Lūkstas lake – one of the largest lakes in Samogitia, and Bilioniai hillfort – the presumed ancient Samogitian capital Medvėgalis. The surroundings contain old churches, manors, and ethnographic villages. Birdlife is abundant, and forests are home to roe deer and wild boar. Several nature trails lead through natural and cultural heritage sites.
