Pažaislis Monastery and Church

One of the finest Baroque ensembles in Northeastern Europe, on the shores of the Kaunas Reservoir. Home to an annual international music festival.

Pažaislis Monastery and Church is one of the most impressive Baroque architectural ensembles in Northeastern Europe, built in 1667–1712 on the shores of the Kaunas Reservoir. The complex was funded by Grand Chancellor of Lithuania Kristupas Zigmantas Pacas for the Camaldolese monks. The church interior features magnificent frescoes by Italian painter Michelangelo Palloni. The monastery ensemble includes a church with a hexagonal dome, monastery buildings, and a spacious courtyard. Since 1996, the annual Pažaislis Music Festival has been held here – one of the most prestigious classical music events in the Baltic states. Today the monastery is home to the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Casimir.
