The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul is the most important church in Šiauliai and the cathedral of the Šiauliai Diocese. The first church on this site was built at the beginning of the 16th century, and the current building dates to the 17th century. The cathedral's white tower with Renaissance forms is one of the most recognizable symbols of Šiauliai. The church interior has changed many times – today it is dominated by Baroque altars and 18th-century paintings. The cathedral was an important center of religious life in the Šiauliai region throughout Lithuanian history. The church rises above Šiauliai Old Town and is visible from many points in the city. Today it is an active parish with regular services and community activities.
