Vilnius Cathedral Basilica

The most important Lithuanian Catholic church, standing in Cathedral Square at the foot of Gediminas Castle Hill. A neoclassical temple with a six-column portico – a symbol of the nation's spiritual life.

Vilnius Cathedral Basilica is the principal Catholic church of Lithuania, whose history dates back to the 13th century when King Mindaugas built the first Christian temple here. Over the centuries the cathedral was rebuilt multiple times – the current neoclassical form with a six-column portico was designed by architect Laurynas Gucevičius in 1783–1801. The underground crypts from the 14th–17th centuries house the remains of Lithuanian grand dukes and kings, including Vytautas the Great and Barbora Radvilaitė. The cathedral's bell tower is a separate former castle tower that has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Vilnius. The church remains an active parish where regular services, concerts, and state ceremonies are held.
