Basilica of Žemaičių Kalvarija

The most important pilgrimage site in Samogitia with a Way of the Cross complex. Great feast days are held annually in July.

The Basilica of Žemaičių Kalvarija is one of Lithuania's most important Catholic pilgrimage sites, located in Samogitia. The church was built in the mid-17th century on the initiative of Dominican monks, with 20 Way of the Cross chapels arranged on hills around the town. The church houses a miraculous icon of the Mother of God with Child, famed for its miracles and attracting pilgrims from all over Lithuania. Every July, the great Žemaičių Kalvarija feast takes place – one of the largest religious events in Lithuania, drawing tens of thousands of worshippers. The Way of the Cross procession is an old Samogitian tradition dating back to the 17th century.
