Chapel of the Gates of Dawn

A famous pilgrimage site with the miraculous icon of the Mother of God. The only surviving gate of medieval Vilnius's defensive wall.

The Chapel of the Gates of Dawn is one of the holiest Catholic pilgrimage sites in Lithuania and all of Eastern Europe, established above the only surviving gate of medieval Vilnius's city walls. The chapel houses the miraculous icon of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn, painted in the early 16th century, venerated by both Catholics and Orthodox Christians. In the 17th century, Carmelite monks built the current chapel above the gate, and in the 18th century it was remodeled in Baroque style. The painting is adorned with gold and silver coverings, surrounded by numerous votive offerings of gratitude. Every year, thousands of pilgrims from Poland, Belarus, and other countries come to venerate this icon.
