The Franciscan Monastery of the Hill of Crosses is a modern sacral complex built in 2000 near the legendary Hill of Crosses, one of Lithuania's most famous landmarks. The monastery was built on the initiative of Pope John Paul II following his visit to the Hill of Crosses in 1993. The complex was designed by architect Arūnas Liola, aiming to combine modern forms with traditional sacral architecture. The monastery is home to Franciscan friars who receive pilgrims and retreat participants. The Hill of Crosses itself is a unique pilgrimage site where over 200,000 crosses have been placed on the hill, symbolizing Lithuanian faith and longing for freedom.
