Church of St. Nicholas

The oldest surviving church in Vilnius, with brickwork dating to 1382 – before the official Christianization of Lithuania. A monument of Gothic architecture.

St. Nicholas Church is the oldest surviving church in Vilnius, with brickwork dating to around 1382–1387, before the official Christianization of Lithuania in 1387. It is believed to have been built for German merchants living in Vilnius. The church is modest but historically extraordinary – it bears witness to the early spread of Christianity in Lithuania. Over the centuries the building was rebuilt several times but retained its Gothic character. In the late 19th century, Lithuanian-language services were held here when they were banned in other churches. The church is a protected cultural heritage site.
