Church of St. John the Baptist in Zapyškis

A unique red-brick Gothic church on the bank of the Nemunas River – one of the smallest and most beautiful Gothic churches in Lithuania.

The Church of St. John the Baptist in Zapyškis is one of the most unique sacral architecture monuments in Lithuania, standing on the bank of the Nemunas River. This small red-brick Gothic church was built in the second half of the 16th century and is one of the smallest churches in the country. The building features pure Gothic forms – pointed window arches, buttresses, and a stepped gable. The church is especially popular among photographers and artists due to its small scale, harmonious proportions, and picturesque riverside location. In spring, when the Nemunas floods, the church is sometimes surrounded by water – these images have become an iconic symbol of the Lithuanian landscape.
