Ignalina is the gateway to eastern Aukštaitija, a town near Aukštaitija National Park. Famous for hundreds of lakes and the Ladakalnis viewpoint. The nearby Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant was one of the most powerful in the world, closed in 2009.

The park contains 126 lakes connected in chains – kayaking is the most popular way to explore them. Palūšė village with its 17th-century wooden church is considered the most beautiful in Lithuania. Ginučiai hillfort offers stunning lake views. Stripeikiai has a unique Beekeeping Museum with ancient hives and bee life demonstrations.
