Lithuania's capital featuring the largest baroque Old Town in Northern Europe. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Named Europe's cheapest travel destination in 2024.
Vilnius was founded in 1323 by Grand Duke Gediminas, who moved the capital from Trakai. Legend tells of an iron wolf dream on the hill of the Šventaragis Valley. Since the 14th century the city has been the heart of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and its Old Town is the largest Baroque ensemble in Northern Europe.
Vilnius Old Town is one of the largest and best-preserved historical centers in Eastern Europe, covering 359 hectares. The city was founded in the 14th century and became the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Here you'll find Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural gems – St. Anne's Church (legend says Napoleon wanted to take it back to Paris), Vilnius University (the oldest in Northern Europe, founded in 1579), and Gediminas Castle with its 48-meter tower. The Užupis district is a bohemian artists' republic with its own constitution, translated into 50+ languages. In 2024, the city welcomed over 1.2 million tourists.
