Historic Lithuanian capital with Eastern Europe's only island castle and unique 600-year Karaite culture. 28 km from Vilnius.
Trakai was the first capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In the 14th century, Grand Duke Kęstutis built the famous Island Castle on Lake Galvė – the only castle built on an island in Eastern Europe. The Karaim community brought here by Vytautas the Great from Crimea in the 14th century still lives here.
Trakai is one of Lithuania's most visited tourist attractions, a former medieval Lithuanian capital. The island castle on Lake Galvė was built in the 14th-15th century during Grand Duke Vytautas's reign, completed in 1409. After decline, it was restored during Soviet times and now operates as a museum. The town is home to Karaites – a Turkic people invited from Crimea by Vytautas in the 14th century as personal bodyguards. Their traditional houses have 3 windows (for God, Vytautas, and guests), and kibinai – crescent-shaped meat pastries – have become Trakai's national dish. Trakai Historical National Park encompasses 200 lakes.
