1361
Lithuania's second-largest city, European Capital of Culture 2022. UNESCO-protected interwar modernism – the world's largest concentration of such architecture.
Kaunas has been mentioned since 1361. Strategically located at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers, it was the most important fortress against the Teutonic Knights. In 1920–1940 Kaunas served as the temporary capital of Lithuania. Its interwar modernist architecture was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023.
Kaunas is unique with an exceptional concentration of interwar modernist architecture. In 2023, UNESCO inscribed "Modernist Kaunas: Architecture of Optimism, 1919–1939" on the World Heritage List. When Vilnius was occupied by Poland in 1920, Kaunas became the temporary capital and grew into a modern European city with 6,000+ new buildings over 20 years. Laisvės Alėja (1.6 km) is Europe's longest pedestrian street. The city is famous for street art – "The Wise Old Man" has become an international symbol. In 2015, Kaunas was awarded the European Heritage Label and became a UNESCO City of Design.
