Birštonas is a resort in the Nemunas loop, known since the 14th century. Grand Duke Vytautas used to hunt and rest here. Mineral waters appeared in the 19th century when healing springs were discovered. The Nemunas Loops Regional Park surrounds the town as a natural amphitheater.

The Nemunas loops are the most impressive river bends in Lithuania, best viewed from Vytautas Hill observation deck (55 m high). The town is famous for its peaceful atmosphere, SPA centers, and sculpture park with over 40 artworks. The cycling path around Nemunas loops (35 km) is one of the most beautiful routes in Lithuania. Birštonas is often chosen as a quieter alternative to Druskininkai.
