Molėtai is the center of the lake-rich Aukštaitija region, famous for Molėtai Astronomical Observatory and Lithuanian Ethnocosmology Museum – the largest museum of its kind in the Baltics. The observatory houses the largest optical telescope in Northern Europe (1.65 m mirror). Night observations attract thousands of visitors annually. Nearby stretches Labanoras Forest – Lithuania's largest forest (55,000 ha), famous for mushroom picking in autumn.
