About

Kaunas is unique with an exceptional concentration of interwar modernist architecture. In 2023, UNESCO inscribed "Modernist Kaunas: Architecture of Optimism, 1919–1939" on the World Heritage List. When Vilnius was occupied by Poland in 1920, Kaunas became the temporary capital and grew into a modern European city with 6,000+ new buildings over 20 years. Laisvės Alėja (1.6 km) is Europe's longest pedestrian street. The city is famous for street art – "The Wise Old Man" has become an international symbol. In 2015, Kaunas was awarded the European Heritage Label and became a UNESCO City of Design.
