Theatre and culture city by the Nevėžis river with Europe's only traveling Puppet Wagon Theatre and the new Stasys Museum.
Panevėžys was founded in 1503 by a privilege of King Alexander Jagiellon on the Nevėžis River. The fifth largest Lithuanian city is famous for its strong theater tradition – the renowned Juozas Miltinis Drama Theater here became one of the most important cultural phenomena in Lithuania.
Panevėžys is Lithuania's fifth-largest city, the cultural capital of Aukštaitija. The Puppet Wagon Theatre (since 1940) is the only one of its kind in Europe: in summer, a horse-drawn wagon travels throughout Lithuania. It won the Hans Christian Andersen Prize in 2003. The Stasys Museum opened in 2024 – a 3,700 m² contemporary art center that attracted 82,000 visitors in its first year. A narrow-gauge railway connects to Anykščiai – a 19th-century heritage. Senvagė Park with its musical fountain is the most popular spot on summer evenings.
