Kernavė is the first known capital of Lithuania, mentioned since the 13th century. Five hillforts testify to a powerful defense system. In 2004, the Kernavė Archaeological Site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an exceptional example of 11 millennia of human activity.

About

Kernavė is the first capital of the Lithuanian state, an archaeological site with 10,000 years of human habitation traces. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. The 194.4 ha area includes 5 impressive hillforts, unfortified settlements, and burial sites. In the 13th century, this was an important political and economic center with complex defenses. Destroyed by Teutonic Knights in 1390. Every early July, the Midsummer/Rasos Festival takes place – Lithuania's largest pagan traditions festival, attracting thousands of participants. The summer solstice is celebrated with bonfires and ancient rituals.
